You've Got Quarantine Fatigue: Staying Connected While Apart

Any other time, we'd be greeting you face to face at EAA's Spirit of Aviation AirVenture week, relishing in our most anticipated event of the year.  Even though we're missing out on catching up we know how important social distancing and quarantining is; but just like all of you, we've got cabin fever and are quickly learning that Quarantine Fatigue is a real thing.  Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much,” but in the current landscape of social distancing figuring out how to do “so much” while “alone” has become the norm.  Now more than ever, fighting quarantine fatigue and trying to maintain our connection with loved ones and colleagues alike, is at the collective forefront of everyone’s minds.  While prolonged periods of isolation (like social distancing) can increase the risk of depression and anxiety, it is a crucial component in helping to slow down the spread of COVID-19 and to protect high-risk populations, according to the CDC.  Even though the lack of interaction can be challenging there are many ways we can still connect with each other. We've listed a few of our favorites below.

Spark Creativity! Try your hand at any type of arts or crafts medium (macrame anyone?) to not only give you a means of expressing yourself but to also help you connect with other individuals and communities who have similar interests.  Similarly, if you don’t feel like creating, you can always commune with special interest groups as well.  Finding forums and online meet-ups to explore new outlets is a great way to not only learn new a new skill but to meet and make lasting connections! Use small acts of kindness to nurture your friendships.  According to the Clevland Clinic, there is evidence that, during gift-giving behaviors, humans secrete “feel good” chemicals in our brains, such as serotonin (a mood-mediating chemical), dopamine (a feel-good chemical) and oxytocin (a compassion and bonding chemical). Sometimes a simple gesture is all you need to boot your spirits and a friend’s.  Consider dropping off some cookies to a neighbor, picking up groceries for a high-risk friend, or even organizing a book swap.  Sending a thoughtful gift is sure to brighten anyone’s day! Give back, virtually. Many organizations are facing difficult budget cuts and constraints creating endless opportunities to volunteer! According to Harvard Medical School, volunteerism helps people to feel more socially connected in addition to reducing stress.  Considering getting involved with a group like VolunteerMatch, to use the expertise you already possess to connect with others; or considering learning something new by donating your time to local and national museums. Studies have shown that volunteering can even extend your life by combating loneliness, keeping you mentally active, and helping develop new relationships. As we navigate through the constantly changing environment we find ourselves in, it’s important to remember that we are more together than we are alone! From scheduling weekly virtual “happy hours,” FaceTime Meet-Ups, Houseparty Gatherings, or anything in between, connecting these days is as simple as pulling up an app on your smartphone.  We know how important it is to stay connected to the people you love and the things you cherish.  It’s why connecting your world isn’t just our business, it’s our passion.
